Lesson 4- Building a Container

Micro flies are a major pest species for crickets and their maggots will consume all the cricket eggs even before they hatch if the correct screening methods are not used. The design of both our small scale and large scale breeding systems prevent this from occurring.
Conventional Container Design
Some people recommend glass tanks for breeding crickets, which is a big mistake over the long term (despite being frequently recommended). They may be easy to clean and contain crickets well, however they are incredibly bad insulators, losing more than 90% of the heat you have paid good money to add.
The success of a cricket colony will require you to maintaining high and consistent temperatures.
Below are some commonly used methods to construct a container. We then discuss design ideas we have developed over the years:
- Cut holes into both ends of a container and lid. Attach screening with duct tape, glue gun or rivets.
- Crickets can eat normal fiberglass screening (commonly used for screening windows) so be sure to use aluminum screening.
- Make an aluminum screen frame (with screening) and place this over the top of a container such as a plastic containers or tubs.
